Kitten Care : How Long Do Kittens Nurse?

Let’s talk about how long do kittens nurse.
Newborns right after they come out, right after the queen or mother cat stimulates them
are generally going to be looking for that nipple to suckle on and get milk or nutrition
from. Kittens are going to nurse until they are full and generally that can be anywhere
from five to ten minutes in most cases. So if the queen or mother cat is doing that for
you then that is natural and they are going to do it on their own, however, if it is an
orphan newborn kitten and you are having to use kitten milk replacer and using a nursing
bottle then typically talk to your veterinary clinic about that and they can guide you on
how much to feed and how long it takes. Most kittens again are going to suckle on one of
these bottles for five to ten minutes until they are full and then they are going to go
to sleep and rest so they can digest that. Generally in most kittens they nurse until
about four weeks of age. After that is when they want to start lapping up milk or gruel
and things like that and they still want to eat several times a day but as newborns they
require much more milk and nutrition and so they are going to be feeding anywhere from
every two to four hours, five to ten minutes at a time.

  1. until 4 weeks of age?? are you serious? how in the world did this guy get his vet license? they should nurse a MINIMUM of six weeks! and many nurse upwards of 12 weeks. DO NOT separate a kitten from its mother for at least 6 weeks and aim for as long as 12 weeks if possible. the only exception is an orphaned kitten and even then you should nurse with a high quality formula for at least 6-8 weeks.

  2. My cats kittens nursed for 6 months! poor mum got so depleted, it took her 1 year to recover. She had a tendency to not eat enough, which has been a problem for her.

  3. Why are my kittens wanting to nurse after 4 months old. Off our male cat. Because momma is gone. They nurse off of our male cat and he lets thwm nurse. But i take them away. What do i do. Because the male cat sometimes gets discouraged. Because i have all 3 of the kittens from a stray mother we after 3 1/2 months took to the pound. Its a non killing animal pound. But she was way too wild and had ear mites and fleas no matter how much id keep the kittens clean and fight the ear mites they keep comming back because momma wouldnt allow me to catch her. Finaly i had enough tried to catch her and she bit us both deep. She never had shots or fixed which i was gonna do for her was planing to keep her too but she was way too wild teaching babies yo run from us and hide and scratch and bite. So we had enough and took her to the pound. But yhey want to nurse off our male cat. What do i do?
